A new study by SkinStore has revealed the best and worst U.S. cities for your skin by analyzing pollution and UV levels across the country.
The study analyzed cities from all 50 states to determine which are the best and worst for your skin based on pollution and UV exposure.
Daily exposure to polluted air can increase the risk of a number of serious conditions which can also impact the skins natural barrier. UV exposure can also cause serious problems such as skin cancer, premature aging of the skin, eye problems and signs of sun damage such as wrinkles, leathery skin, liver spots, actinic keratosis, and solar elastosis.
Continuous exposure to both of these can lead to the breakdown of everything your skin needs to look healthy, while also leading to early signs of aging.
These factors were combined to create an overall ‘skin score’ to identify how good the city is for your skin and highlight where residents should be taking extra steps to protect their skin.
Here are the Top and Bottom Ten Cities for Healthy Skin:
1. Manchester, New Hampshire
2. Burlington, Vermont
3. New York, New York
4. Anchorage, Alaska
5. Fargo, North Dakota
6. Sioux Falls, South Dakota
7. Portland, Maine
8. Boston, Massachusetts
9. Cheyenne, Wyoming
10. Virginia Falls, Virginia
41. Las Vegas, Nevada
42. Chicago, Illinois
43. Indianapolis, Indiana
44. Honolulu, Hawaii
45. Salt Lake City, Utah
46. Atlanta, Georgia
47. Houston, Texas
48. Phoenix, Arizona
49. Jackson, Mississippi
50. Los Angeles, California
Least Polluted Cities
Benefiting from a combination of low pollution and UV index, the least polluted cities in the U.S. are Manchester in New Hampshire, followed by Burlington in Vermont and New York City.
Coming in at the top of the ranking, New Hampshire's low levels of pollution are thanks to its quaint towns and large expanses of wilderness. Similarly, Burlington’s low pollution levels benefit from Vermont’s lake and mountain regions.
Interestingly, New York City ranks third in the study. Despite being an extremely busy city, New York’s pollution levels are some of the lowest in the U.S. thanks to the city and state’s recent efforts to lower emissions from regional and local sources.
Most Polluted Cities
Los Angeles on the other hand is ranked as the worst city for your skin, with a high pollution value of 12.6. It is the center of the nation's film and television industry and a popular tourist attraction, all bringing more pollution to its air.
Jackson, Phoenix, Arizona and Houston also ranked badly for their high pollution levels. Although they are slightly better than Los Angeles, all cities scored between 11.9 -12.8 in the skin score rankings, displaying a combination of worryingly high pollution levels and high UV exposure.
