The cosmeceutical market continues to grow and diversify as new marketers and suppliers enter the space, meeting consumer demand for innovative new products and ingredient technologies. It’s no wonder, then, that this global anti-aging category was estimated at $65 billion in 2008, and is predicted top $105 billion in sales by 2013.
At “The New Cosmeceuticals,” an HBA Global Expo technical track conference, industry insiders weighed in on trends in novel skin care technologies, such as anti-aging ingredients derived from plants. Pro-Vitamin V6 was also highlighted as a new cosmeceutical agent.
The cosmeceutical session was moderated by Barbara Green, vice president of technology and clinical affairs, NeoStrata, a line of restorativeskin care products uniquely formulated with alpha hydroxyacids (AHAs), polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) and bionic PHAs. Speakers included Lori Bush, president and general manager, Rodan + Fields, who discussed enhancing over-the-counter formulations with active cosmetic ingredients; as well as Dr. Johane Guay, chief executive officer and co-founder of Biopharmacopae, whose company markets science-based cosmeceutical actives from plant ingredients.
“Each product batch is tested for efficacy parameters,” noted Dr. Guay about Biopharmacopae’s products. Its latest rollout is Sereniks-207, a soothing anti-aging ingredient ideal for sensitive skin.
Dr. Eiko Ohuchi, manager of the product development department, Daiichi Fine Chemical Co. Ltd., then presented data regarding Panadoxine P, a novel cosmeceutical vitamin B6 derivative for skin health that is big in Japan. Topical preparations containing Vitamin B6 are helpful to treat skin roughness, acne, sunburn and inflammation, according to Dr. Ohuchi.
