Nearly 11,000 people in India are submitting a petition to protest the sale and import of cosmetics that have been tested on animals.
Alokparna Sengupta of Humane Society International is expected to submit the petition to Drug Controller General of India G.N. Singh.
Back in July 2013, India already become the first country in South Asia to remove animal testing from its Cosmetic Standard. The use of modern non-animal alternative tests is now mandatory, and has replaced invasive animal tests.
But now the new petition goes a step further, in an effort to prevent companies from outsourcing testing to third countries and then importing animal-tested beauty products back into India for sale.
Sengupta said that animal testing for cosmetics is morally unjustifiable, and that it’s vital that the country doesn’t “become the dumping ground for animal-tested cosmetics from other countries."
The group of protesters are calling attention to the cause of in October, since it is the month Mahatma Gandhi was born.
The animal testing ban began in the EU, when the final phase of the 7th amendment of the EU Cosmetics Directive went into effect on March 11th, 2013.
