Zafirro, a part of Bright Light Ventures, which calls itself an "innovation and entrepreneurial incubator," designed the sharpest razor ever made - and it's also the world's most expensive, with a $100k price tag.
Through its new Kickstarter campaign, the company hopes to lower its production costs and slash the razor's price to $299 - making its razor available to the masses, or at least customers that aren't in the elite 1% of the word's most weathiest. Pre-orders are being accepted now.
As of today, nearly $56k has been pledged of the brand's $250 goal - but in order to receive any funds, that goal must be reached by the campaign's end date on January 5th, 2016.
Why Its So Special
The razor's blade is made from pure, white sapphire, making it "sharper than any other balde on the planet," the company says, and more than 100 times as durable. Sapphire is second only to diamond in its hardness, so the blades stay sharp.
The team at Zafirro say they designed the tip to be 10 times sharper than a surgeon's scalpel.
Solving the Disposable Razor Pollution Issue
Zafirro says that the EPA estimates that 2 billion razor blades are sent to landfills every year in the U.S. The company hopes to chnage these stats since its sapphire blade will last 6 to 12 months, and they hope to improve longevity in the future.
More Details
Zafirro's first razor - the Zafirro Iridium - launched in 2011 and is priced at $100k. After being able to cut some costs, the Zafirro Gold launched, priced at $18k.
The company says that since Sapphire is now used in iPhone 6 and solar panels, it is helping to drive the material's costs down. They have also found new suppliers, and with the help of funding from its Kickstarter campaign, hope to be able to reach the high volumes necessary in manufacturing to price its new model - the Zafirro Z2 - at $299.
