L’Oreal and UNESCO have announced the two U.S.-based winners of its 18th annual For Women in Science (FWIS) awards - Dr. Jennifer Doudna and Dr. Sabrina Stierwalt. The winners will be honored at the awards ceremony in Paris on March 24th.
Dr. Jennifer Doudna is a Nobel prize front runner, and the brains behind the discovery of Crispr-Cas9, a revolutionary gene-editing method that is changing the scientific landscape of everything from genetic medicine to agriculture.
Dr. Sabrina Stierwalt is conducting the first study of gas dynamics and star formation in interacting dwarf galaxies, with the goal of better understanding how stars formed the early universe.
Lauren Paige, vice president of Public Affairs and Strategic Initiatives at L’Oréal USA, said, “The extraordinary work of Dr. Doudna and Dr. Stierwalt clearly demonstrates that women in science have the power to change the world.”

Doudna, an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. Doudna’s CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology that has the power to “rewrite” DNA.
Stierwalt is a postdoctoral scientist in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Virginia and is being honored as an International Rising Talent for her work on the study of how galaxies evolve.
For Women in Science (FWIS) is one of L’Oreal’s largest initiatives, honoring top female scientists and rising talents, helping promote the work they do through mentorship opportunities and significant grant funding. Over the course of its 18-year history, the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program has recognized more than 2,500 women scientists in 112 countries, including two Nobel Prize winners.
