Based on a video interview conducted by Jamie Matusow
Jon Dinapoli, founder of Jon Michael Design, stars in the latest Q&A in our video series, Packaging Personalities, hosted by our editor-in-chief, Jamie Matusow.
“Each bottle design has so much meaning behind it," Matusow says to Dinapoli during our exclusive 15-minute video Q&A. He described his three recent projects -- and all are Fragrance Foundation Award Finalists this year. (The winners will be announced in September 10 during a webinar at 12 noon EST.)
'Elevating a Horseshoe' for Ignacio Figueras
UPDATE: Figueras presented a 2020 Fragrance Foundation Award, on a horse
First, Dinapoli discusses the new Ignacio Figueras Collection, a collab with “Nacho” Figueras -- a world-renowned polo player and a face you may recognize, since he starred in campaigns for Ralph Lauren for 20 years, as a model.
The Ignacio Figueras Collection includes six scents: Buenos Aries (where Figueras is from); Palm Beach; Aspen; Dubai; Windsor (England); and Jaipur (India). Each place is a favorite destination for Figueras, and his family.
The luxe bottle is inspired by a horseshoe. “We took the idea of a horseshoe and elevated it, with different stones on top of each bottle,” Dinapoli tells Matusow. The stones are made from different materials and textures, chosen to represent each place. A portion of all proceeds from the brand is donated to Sentebale, the organization founded by Prince Harry to help children living with HIV in South Africa.
Say ‘Hello’ to Lionel Richie
Next, Dinapoli talks about launching Lionel Richie’s fragrance brand, Hello by Lionel Richie — and says the collab began by spending an entire day at the legendary singer’s home.
“He literally took me room by room through his house,” Dinapoli tells Matusow, and says he was inspired by his home decor to design a metal cage with a cross-hatch pattern, which surrounds the bottle. “The cross-hatch pattern is a design detail that is throughout his home,” Dinapoli says, saying he spotted it, in some form, on a fireplace mantle, the doors to the billiard room, and on various etched glass items.
Hello by Lionel Richie is nominated for the Fragrance of the Year award, in the Popular category. “He’s just a dream to work with,” Dinapoli adds. (FYI: Dinapoli also worked with Sarah Jessica Parker for more than a decade - and wrote about the intriguing story behind the fragrance, Stash SJP.)
More details about working one-on-one with Lionel Richie are in the video Q&A at the link below.
Designed to Convey a Message for The Phluid Project
When the team at The Phluid Project was looking for a way to convey its message of inclusivity through its fragrance packaging, the company recruited Jon Michael Design, and Dinapoli came up with an innovative concept. (The fragrance is Dinapoli's third to score the 'Finalist' title in the Fragrance Foundation Awards this year.)
“We wanted to create something that was really special and unique…not just another fragrance bottle,” Dinapoli tells Matusow. “We thought about the word 'fluid' and what it means,” he says.
The bottle’s ‘juice’ is two different viscosities, which remain separate — and are different colors. “When you shake it, it combines to create a new color - with motion,” Dinapoli explains. Each of the fragrances in the collection, Transcend, Balance and Intention, feature different colors.
Design During a Pandemic
We’ve all had to change how we work, due to the Covid pandemic — so what has changed for Dinapoli and his team at Jon Michael Design? And how has the pandemic changed his design process?
It seems a lot has changed for Dinapoli -- for the better, since the quarantine. Matusow also asks how the current surge in e-commerce sales might affect package design, going forward.
