Garnier has launched solid shampoo bars with zero plastic waste, aimed at giving UK consumers more choice when it comes to sustainability and helping to reduce the 520 million shampoo bottles thrown away in the UK each year.
The four new Solid Shampoo Bars – part of the Ultimate Blends collection – go on sale today at Boots – online and in stores nationwide - signaling another major step in Garnier’s environmental commitment.
Garnier scientists have spent the last 18 months evaluating more than 60 formulas to arrive at a blend which replicates the wash experience of a liquid shampoo that will cleanse and nourish hair without stripping it or weighing it down.
Benefits of Solid Shampoo Bars
The new Solid Shampoo bars offer the care, foaminess and creaminess of a liquid shampoo in a solid format. The four blends (Revitalizing, Strengthening, Hydrating, Softening) are inspired by nature and made with 94% plant-based ingredients.
The product is soap-free and silicone-free, 97% biodegradable, uses 80% less packaging, and requires 70% less fossil energy for transportation. The bars were also developed with “fast-rinse” technology that can help save up to one bottle of water per wash and a reduction in environmental impact of 25% versus classic liquid shampoos. The concentrated format means one bar can last up to two months
Green Beauty Initiative
The launch is the first from Garnier since the announcement of its Green Beauty initiative earlier this year. The company’s original Ultimate Blends shampoo and conditioner bottles are already 100% recyclable and will be made from100% recycled plastic by 2021. Producing 1.8 billion health & beauty products each year, available in 64 countries, Garnier hopes its considerable reach will lead to more widespread consumer awareness of the sustainable choices now available.
Garnier’s global brand president, Adrien Koskas, said, “Sustainability has always been at the heart of Garnier; producing more natural formulas, using sustainable and fair-trade ingredients, even being the first to bring certified organic products to the mass skincare market. We want to lead by example and do everything we can to make a more positive impact on the planet. Today’s launch is a major part of the Green Beauty programme we announced earlier this year and a significant step toward meeting our suitably ambitious 2025 change commitments.”
The L’Oréal-owned brand’s Green Beauty Initiative is part of the Group’s L’Oréal For the Future sustainability program, which defines quantifiable targets for 2030 to improve packaging, fight climate change, preserve biodiversity and sustain water management.
