The first-ever L'Oreal Transparency Summit is taking place today. One important milestone was announced—a focus on Green Science.
By 2030, 95% of its ingredients will be derived from renewable plant sources, abundant minerals, or circular processes; and 100% of formulas will be respectful of the aquatic environment.
"This move comes at a time when protecting the planet is an absolute necessity, and the Covid-19 pandemic is driving a heightened demand for products that are both good for health and safe for the environment," the company said in a statement.

L’Oréal Deputy Chief Executive Officer (and incoming CEO) Nicolas Hieronimus welcomed guests.He explained, “With Green Sciences we are entering a new chapter for L’Oréal Research & InnIovation, which has been a key driving force behind the company since its creation. Our ambition is that by 2030 we will be able to offer women and men around the world increasingly effective, safe cosmetics that respect the environment.”
L'Oreal's team will also focus on other sustainability initiatives, including recyclable packaging. Plus, packaging will include scannable QR codes so consumers can easily learn more about product's ingredients.
L'Oreal for the Future
Julia Sarhy, L'Oreal's Global Consumer Insights Director, spoke about its L'Oreal for the Future plan, and its new commitment to focus on quality, efficacy, safety, and responsibility.L'Oreal's team is also is committed to communicating with consumers with:
- a willingness to share
- clarity
- honesty
She replied, "Consumers are looking for products that will provide a reassuring safety - and products that consider their health as a priority. And second — there is a 'back to basics' mindset. Consumers expect simple, fresher, and less controversial ingredients - the clean beauty movement."
Conscious, 'Clean,' & Science-Backed Beauty
Another big focus for L'Oreal, and its consumers, is Conscious Beauty. "You are taking care of yourself and the environment around you —- and this is the purpose we are bringing to the forefront," Sarhy explained.Clean beauty, however, doesn't necessarily mean 'natural'—and consumers trust science, according to Sarhy. L'Oreal's team is dedicated to transparency, and that means explaining to consumers the science behind the efficacy and safety of its ingredients.
