The establishment in France of Nippon Shikizai distinguishes this Japanese industrialist whose history began in 1930 as a supplier of pigments. The company has become a major full-service player in both makeup and skin care, working for the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.
"We want to combine two skills, Japanese and French," said Bertrand Lasserre, managing director of Thepenier Pharma & Cosmetics, during a recent press conference. This Norman company was bought in 2000 by Nippon Shikizai as it celebrated its 70-year anniversary.
Until 2000, Thepenier was more specialized in pharmaceuticals, but added makeup products (2020 turnover: 27.6 million euros achieved at 50% with American brands). And this takeover marks the start of an ambitious investment policy in France on the part of the Japanese group: 6 million euros for a building dedicated to make-up in 2003, 4 million euros for the extension and modernization of the plant in 2014, further expansion (4 million euros) in 2018 and in 2020 the acquisition of a new, fully automated high-speed tube filling line ( i.e. 3 million euros). In addition, in 2017, the French subsidiary bought Orléans Cosmetics, a subcontractor specializing in makeup which became Nippon Skikizai France.
Chairman of Nippon Skikizai France and Thepenier Pharma & Cosmetics, Tsuyoshi Hasuo recalls the investments made since 2018 in Orléans: a new line for compaction, loose powder filling, two hot casting lines, etc. “We are positioning ourselves more and more as a specialist in clean beauty and are developing our hot casting activities. This year, we have been offering several stick formulas, including a skin care stick with 100% natural ingredients."
“Naturalness” is at the heart of the group's R&D, and both Thepenier and Nippon Skikizai France are Ecocert certified. This concern for the environment - the ISO 14001 standard on the integration of environmental concerns is in the process of being obtained - is one of the aspects of the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) set up by the Japanese group (turnover at February 29, 2020: 12.207 billion yen / 114.25 million dollars). Its other aspects are business integrity (anti-corruption policy, complete securing of confidential customer data on company servers) and social policy with the main objective of gender equality and employee participation in profits. A 360 ° program.
