Despite only recording a handful of cases (about 1,500 new cases on Sunday according to The New York Times), China’s Southwestern hub of Chengdu was put under sudden lockdown on Thursday evening as the city’s 21.2 million residents were ordered to stay within the confines of their homes.
The city will continue mass-testing through Wednesday to achieve “Covid Zero in the community as soon as possible,” according to a statement issued late Sunday night.
Furthermore, authorities ordered all businesses to shut down except for supermarkets, pharmacies and hospitals. The lockdown is the most severe since Shanghai’s two-month lockdown in April.
The sixth-largest in city in China, Chengdu accounts for about 1.7% of China’s gross domestic product and is home to numerous automakers and technology companies, including Volkswagen AG, Volvo Car AB and Foxconn Technology Group.
Overall, some 60 million people across China are facing full or partial lockdowns, according to Chinese media, from Chengdu to the southern city of Shenzhen and the oil-producing city of Daqing.
Lockdowns across the board show how local authorities are sticking to the Covid Zero strategy ordered by President Xi Jinping, particularly as the Chinese Communist Party congress where he is expected to secure a third term as leader approaches.
