Pantone has announced its Color of the Year 2023—Viva Magenta. It's Pantone #18-1750. It's a nuanced crimson red tone that balances warm and cool hues, Pantone says.
It's a change from the more subtle Very Peri, Pantone's Color of the Year 2022. And in 2021, Pantone named a "color duo" as the two colors of the year, Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Gray.
Magenta is "an unconventional shade for an unconventional time: a new vision," Pantone's IG post says. "Tapping into the experimental spirit of Viva Magenta, Pantone explores the dynamic between Artificial Intelligence and human creativity to create The Magentaverse."
Pantone revealed the news on December 1st during a livestream at Art Basel Miami. Watch the announcement on Pantone's site.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director, Pantone Color Institute, comments:
"In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. Pantone 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.
Rooted in the primordial...Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature...Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength."
Viva Magenta seems uplifting and "electrifying," as Pantone describes it. It;s a color we'll undoubtedly see more of on lips, hair—and all types of makeup, apparel, and accessories.
Pantone adds, "Viva Magenta is "a transformative red tone capable of driving design to create a more positive future."
