On Tuesday, February 7th, 2023, Unimac Packaging in Carlstadt, NJ hosted a Lunch & Learn for Rutgers University Packaging Engineering students in collaboration with NJPEC.
One of NJPEC’s goals for 2023 is to get students on more production floors for hands on learning. NJPEC Diamond Sponsor, Unimac Packaging, opened their doors to show the Rutgers students what really goes on behind the scenes at a printing facility. Students in attendance were Yechan Kim, Katrina Tun, Imtiyaz Ahmed, Emily Phu, and Golora Hatefi, all of whom were interested, engaged and excited to be learning in a real plant.
The day started with a Q&A session between industry professionals and the students. In attendance were Greg Matonti, President of Unimac, as well as Maria Lachar (NJPEC Sponsorship Chair) and Michele Murphy also from Unimac, Mark Kenah (NJPEC Co-Chair Golf Outing) from Albert Paper, Jay Gorga from Beauty Packaging and NJPEC President Kristyn Shaner from Wexler Packaging Products.
Following the Q&A, everyone enjoyed lunch together provided by Unimac. Greg Matonti guided students on a 2+ hour full tour of the Unimac plant. Showing them all aspects of printing from the press room to the ink room, to bindery and fulfillment. This was the first time walking a printing facility before for all five students.
The students had the opportunity to talk with industry professionals throughout the day and students got insight from those veterans of the industry. They shared their goals upon graduation, current co-ops, discussed the workplace environment as well as networking, and how to grow your network in the professional world.
