In 2021 Kao’s proposal for a 3D Space Shampoo for wiping away dirt and sebum from the scalp and hair was selected by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the unique hair care product was used onboard the International Space Station (ISS) by Japan’s veteran astronaut Koichi Wakata during his five-month mission.
Now, Kao’s Space Shampoo Sheet will be offered in limited quantities down here on Earth for the first time—on Rakuten Ichiba, one of Japan’s largest e-commerce shopping malls.
The Space Shampoo Sheet features an uneven, three‐dimensional shape and comes impregnated with cleanser for use on hair. The raised bumps on the 3D sheet wipe away dirt and sebum from the scalp and roots of the hair while providing a massaging action for the scalp.
Each sheet is individually packaged for easy portability, and can be used comfortably in space, or indoors or outdoors on Earth. According to Kao, Space Shampoo sheets are ideal for when users seek a change of pace or are too busy to bathe or shower with water.
The packaging features an illustration of a colorful anime-style astronaut with pink hair and a cute alien companion.
Limited quantities will be available April 3rd in Rakuten Ichiba.
