L'Oreal is #1
L’Oréal ranks at #1 with $40.84 billion in beauty sales. The company posted an incredible 18.5% sales increase in 2022, and E-commerce sales reached nearly $12 billion.Innovative packaging is always closely tied to a beauty company's success, and L’Oréal filed 50 patents for packaging in 2022.
Unilever is #2
Unilever ranks at #2 with $27.6 billion in beauty sales. Its Beauty & Wellbeing unit accounted for 20% of the group turnover. Haircare grew by mid-single digits, and Prestige Beauty delivered another year of double-digit growth. Unilever’s Personal Care division represented 23% of group turnover and saw a 7.9% increase in sales.Estée Lauder Companies is #3
The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) ranks #3 with $15.9 billion in beauty sales. Sales were down, briefly—and recovered.Fabrizio Freda, CEO of ELC, said, “We returned to organic sales growth in the fourth quarter, delivering our outlook. For full-year fiscal 2023, we delivered organic sales growth and prestige beauty share gains in many developed and emerging markets...but Asia travel retail pressured results, particularly in Skin Care—and we continued to experience softness in North America."
Freda continued, "Fragrance excelled, up double digits in every region. Makeup improved sequentially to double-digit growth in the fourth quarter as more markets emerged into the post-pandemic era.”
