The Canadian drugstore, Shoppers Drug Mart is reducing plastic waste with its Quo Beauty Free Recycling Program. The retailer is partnering with TerraCycle to offer customers a way to recycle empty Quo Beauty cosmetics components to keep them out of landfills and incinerators.
This partnership comes less than a year after Shoppers Drug Mart launched “More Planet Love" by Quo Beauty – "a more sustainable packaging that uses recycled plastics, monomaterials and less plastic packaging."
"As we work to ensure all control brand packaging is recyclable or reusable by 2025, we continue to look for new and innovative ways to eliminate the use of single-use plastics for all product packaging," said Pat Dean, SVP, Category Management at Shoppers Drug Mart.
Empty Quo Beauty cosmetic components can be mailed in to be cleaned and separated by material type before being recycled into raw formats to be made into new products. Customers can join the program by signing up on the TerraCycle program page to download a prepaid shipping label.
Eligible Quo Beauty cosmetics components include:
The Quo Beauty Cosmetics Free Recycling Program is open to individuals, schools, offices and community groups.
The majority of cosmetic products are not accepted by curbside recycling services due to their complex, multilayer packaging, which often includes small components such as wands, pumps, and caps that slip through the sorting machinery at recycling facilities," said Tom Szaky, TerraCycle founder and CEO. "As the first major retailer in Canada to create a free recycling program for their own private-label beauty brand, Shoppers Drug Mart is setting a great example for the beauty industry."
For every pound of cosmetics waste shipped in through the recycling program, $1 will be donated to the Shoppers Foundation for Women's Health—a foundation to create equitable and accessible care for all women in Canada.
