Aluminum packaging—and all types of metal packaging—has been so popular with beauty brands lately, and now there's an easier way to develop metal packaging in custom colors.
Pantone—in partnership with X-Rite and Sun Chemical—has added Monobloc color libraries to the "PantoneLive" digital color system, specifically for extruded aluminum aerosol packaging.
Color looks different depending on the material, so this is a more accurate representation of how a brand's color will look on aluminum. "The new libraries facilitate the accurate communication of Pantone standards in the production of monobloc cans, helping brands and metal packaging manufacturers set achievable expectations in the design, proofing, and printing for gloss or matte varnish on monobloc aerosols, aluminum collapsible tubes, cartridges, and felt pen cases," the press release states.

The monobloc libraries give the best possible representation of Pantone colors for producing extruded aluminum aerosol cans, as shown in the photo. “This will simplify the color approval process and removes guesswork, delays with ink laydowns, and reworks during new design production runs—and it creates a more sustainable and cost-effective process," says Eduardo Alegria, Global Champion Metal Deco inks, Sun Chemical. "It's a game-changer for brands and manufacturers.”
The libraries were developed by capturing the closest achievable match to the core Pantone Matching System colors, using applied ink with either gloss or matte varnish onto monobloc cans, bottles, or containers.
Cindy Cooperman, VP of Global Brand Sales, X-Rite, comments, “Can making is a complex process, and the reflective, curved shape of aluminum containers makes producing accurate and consistent color challenging. The monobloc libraries in PantoneLIVE, combined with X-Rite’s Ci64 spectrophotometer and formulation and quality control software, make it easy to select, measure, and produce consistent colors to maintain brand integrity.”
