HBA 2005

A preview of the 13th annual beauty trade show held this month in New York City.

The 13th Annual Health and Beauty America Expo is slated for Sept. 27-29 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City. Last year, more than 16,000 people attended the event. This year’s expo promises to be equally exciting, featuring an extensive exhibition, conference programs and the 6th Annual International Package Design Awards (IPDA).

HBA will kick off at 9 a.m. on Sept. 27 with a keynote address from Susan Kropf, president and chief operating officer of Avon Products Inc., who will be discussing the critical drivers to brand power. Avon markets to women around the world through 4.9 million independent sales representatives in 100 countries. Its product lines include brands such as Anew, Skin-So-Soft and Mark.

The exhibition opens its doors following the keynote address. Over 600 international exhibitors are expected to be in attendance this year.Suppliers of packaging, private label and contract manufacturing, raw materials, ingredients, point of purchase displays, finished goods, promotional accessories, design and consulting will be on hand to present attendees with the latest products and ideas related to the cosmetic and personal care industries.

Industry Awards Dinner

Held Sept. 27 from 5:30 p.m. through 9 p.m., the industry awards dinner takes place at the New York Hilton in New York City. Finalists have been selected in different categories and channels of distribution for excellence in cosmetics, personal care and fragrance packaging. For more information on IPDA finalists, see p. 42 in this issue.

A new category has also been added this year. Besides mass and limited distribution, companies had the opportunity to submit packages for the salon and spa professional industry. All category leaders and the grand prize recipient will be announced at the dinner. The IPD Awards are sponsored by Cosmetic Packaging & Design and Happi.

Preceding the presentation of category leaders and the grand prize award, three individuals and one research and development team will be honored at the evening event.

John Demsey, global brand president, Estée Lauder, will be the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in Marketing. Alan J. Meyers, senior vice president—corporate scientific research and development, L’oréal, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in Product Development. Lorraine Ahart, vice president of packaging development at Victoria’s Secret Beauty Company will be honored with The Packaging Executive of the Year award. The New Product Research and Development Technical Team Award will go to the product development team for Lancôme’s Resurface Peel.

Conference Program

A conference program spanning three days will include over 200 speakers aligned with the cosmetic and personal care industries. Various tracks will be offered—among them, master’s, marketing, packaging and point of purchase displays.

Packaging sessions will be held throughout the day on Sept. 28. Topics in the packaging track include: adding value through great design, labeling and decorating, prestige packaging within a budget, the power of the package and utilizing technology to speed products to market.

The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association will present a special session titled CTFA Regulatory Affairs: U.S. and International Issues Affecting Cosmetics and OTC Drugs. The panel of experts will discuss domestic and international issues affecting the development and marketing of cosmetic products in the U.S. and worldwide markets.

Other Highlights

INSIDE BEAUTY, a three-day trade show and educational conference, will run concurrently with HBA. The new event will focus exclusively on the convergence of beauty, health and wellness for the cosmetics and personal care industries.

Also running concurrently with HBA is an expanded PCITX Personal Care and Technology Expo, an event which features the latest trends in formulation, naturals, high performance ingredients and bio-engineered delivery systems.
