HBA 2003, Health and Beauty America will kickoff its 11th annual showing on Sept. 30, with an address by Susan Arnold, president of Global Personal Beauty and Global Feminine Care for Procter & Gamble Corp.
The presentation, “Growing the Beauty Business: One Consumer at a Time,” will be held at the Special Events Hall at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, New York, NY, at 9:00 a.m.
Starting on Sept. 30th - Oct. 2, HBA will be the gathering place for cosmetic industry professionals to see products, attend seminars and learn about new services and technologies.
On Sept. 3, Jack Gonzalez, director of Health & Beauty Events for CMP Princeton, said that there were 511 companies registered for HBA and another 27 signed up for PCITX, the Personal Care Ingredients & Technology Expo, which will take place concurrently at the Javits Center.
“In a very difficult economy, we are even with attendee registrations from last year and actually expect to be ahead in terms of exhibiting companies,” Gonzalez said. “There are new companies coming for the first time. And some very significant ones exhibiting from Asia, India and South America.”
About 30% of the exhibitors will be multi-nationals and about 10% of the attendees will be from outside the United States, according to Gonzalez.
Overall, the companies will show all it takes to launch a new beauty product: from advertising and aerosols, applicators and atomizers, to unit packaging and valves. Raw materials will also be on display, ranging from almond oil and aloe vera to vitamin complexes and waxes. More than 110,000 square feet of exhibition space will be filled with the latest, most innovative products and services from formulators, contract fillers, ingredient suppliers and private label manufacturers as well as packaging, dispensing and labeling companies.
HBA Honors Achievement
Moving from the Javits Center to the New York Hilton on opening day of HBA, the 2nd Annual Industry Awards Dinner will be a who’s who of the beauty business. the event will honor the men and women who have made significant contributions to the cosmetic, toiletry, and fragrance industries.
Industry executives and teams will be recognized in four categories, plus a presentation will be made this year to The Estée Lauder Companies’ senior vice president, Evelyn Lauder for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Lauder founded the organization in 1993.
The Packaging Executive of the Year Award will be presented to Kathy Kordowski, vice president of package engineering and marketing services, Avon Products Inc. Kordowski was selected by packaging suppliers for her years of dedication to packaging excellence.
The Lifetime Achievement in Product Development Award will be presented to Harvey Gideon, senior vice president, global research and development, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. Intended to acknowledge a lifetime contribution to the advancement of technology in the cosmetic and personal care industry, Gedeon has been chosen by his peers for his technical competency, leadership, vision and managerial skills.
The New Product R&D Technical Award will recognize the achievement that took place in the development of Colgate-Palmolive’s Simply White Clear Whitening Gel. The team to be honored includes John Curtis, associate director, technology; Peter Santarpia, technology associate; Michael Collins, technology associate; and Robin Cabanas, manager, technology.
The Lifetime Achievement Award: Advancement of Beauty through Science will be presented to Dr. Kligman, Emeritus Professor of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Director of the Aging Skin Clinic at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. The award recognizes the scientific achievements and contributions made to the beauty industry by academia.
The 4th Annual International Package Design awards will be presented to the leader in each of five categories: Cosmetics, Fragrance, Personal Care, Skin Care: Limited and Skin Care: Mass. (Read about the IPDA finalists on page 56.) One package will be chosen as the overall lwinner for the year. This year, in addition to honoring the packages, the marketing companies and the various suppliers, the designer of the winning packages will also be recognized.
Education: Key to Future Success
Well-known for its excellent educational lineup, this year’s HBA has a program of more than 40 sessions for the areas of marketing, display, packaging and product development. This year, HBA had also added three special sessions to its comprehensive program of seminars and master classes.
On Oct. 1, the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association, (CTFA) will present a session, “State, Federal and International Regulatory Issues Affecting Cosmetic and OTC Drugs.” Running from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the program will be moderated by E. Edward Kavanaugh, president of CTFA. Topics for discussion will cover domestic and international issues affecting the development and marketing of cosmetic products in the U.S. and worldwide markets. Also covered will be a thorough analysis of FDA regulatory issues affecting cosmetics and OTC drugs, ingredient safety issues, international regulations, as well as an update on organic claims, California Proposition 65 and the status of the California VOC tax.
CTFA panelists will include: G.N. McEwen Jr., vice president of science; Thomas J. Donegan Jr., vice president, legal and general counsel; and Louis Santucci, vice president, international.
Two special sessions will be presented on New Developments in Natural Ingredients and Products on Oct. 1 at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. with different panelists and topics. Both sessions will examine the latest in natural products and applications.
Michel M. Mane, president of Mane USA, a leading supplier of natural ingredients, will deliver a keynote address on “Truly Natural Products: Turning a Dream into a Reality,” at 9:00 a.m.
Speakers from Grasse, France—the fragrance capital of the world—will also speak in this two-part seminar. Marie-Christine Grasse, national curator, International Perfume Museum, will cover “What We Have Learned From 500 Years of Production of Naturals.” Other topics include: “Natural Products and Their Place in Personal Care,”“Lavender & Lavandin in Modern Perfumery & Cosmetics,” and “Isolate of Natural Product: Finding the Very Nature.”
“Marketing professionals, technicians and product development teams will all benefit from the up-to-the-minute information that is being presented in our educational program,” stressed Gonzalez. “No where else in North America, but at HBA will you learn so much about topics that are critical to your new products and success.”
ICMAD Shares Information
At HBA, The Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers and Distributors Association (ICMAD) will present a seminar, “Building Your Company From Concept to Market,” on Oct. 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
ICMAD speakers will include: Howard Hirsch, chief executive of Kosma-Kare/Waterjel; Monika E. Harrison, chief, Human Capital Office at the U.S. Small Business Association; Larry Kneip, vice president of Interchange Bank; Trae Bodge, co-founder and creative director of Three Custom Color Specialists.
