Sun Care has entered a new dimension, it seems, is taking packaging cues from its Skin Care and Personal Care cousins. An extensive selection of products is available this season, and the deco effects on many of the items make them beach bag-worthy of attention.
Most important, consumers, especially outdoorsy types and beach-goers have gotten the message loud and clear: Sun protection is essential to avoiding negative effects that can be caused by sun exposure.
Dr. Julie Karen, a dermatologist and paid sponsor of Edgewell Personal Care, says, “I always stress the importance of wearing sunscreen every day, rain or shine, but it’s especially important if you are going to be spending several hours in the sun. Skin cancer is extremely common; over the past thirty years, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined so it’s crucial to stay protected. You need to reapply sunscreen every two hours, or immediately after swimming, sweating or toweling off. I always tell my patients to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.”
Two products Dr. Karen recommends are from Banana Boat, which she says has “a ton of great options for the whole family.” Two of their new products are Dry Balance Sunscreen and Kids Sport Sunscreen with PowerStay Technology.

Coppertone's "assurance assessment"
Whatever the packaging and the formulation, what counts in sun care is the protection level. Coppertone, whose name has been synonymous with sun care for decades, recently commissioned an independent "assurance assessment," designed to provide consumers with greater confidence when choosing sunscreen. Bayer, the company behind Coppertone, asked AccountAbility, a trusted, worldwide consulting and standards firm, to undertake an independent assurance assessment of 10 of its top-selling Coppertone products in the U.S., and then make the report available to the public.
Bayer gave the external assurance provider access to the facilities, records and people necessary to conduct its assessment, including: processes, systems, controls, performance data, principles and internal guidelines; testing and performance guidelines developed and enforced in accordance with U.S. regulations; quality assurance processes and systems developed and enforced for packaging and labeling; Bayer's processes, controls and performance guidelines used to manage their suppliers; and 10 different products, including lotions, sprays, sticks and its new "Whipped" sunscreens.
The independent assurance assessment concluded that the Bayer products comply with internal and all applicable external guidelines to ensure the labeling accuracy of Coppertone products, accurately test and implement quality assurance procedures, and are found to comply with quality, safety and efficacy requirements.
