Happy Spring! It’s always a much anticipated time of year with warming temperatures and signs of regeneration in the natural world. With thoughts of the Earth, it’s also the season when Beauty Packaging takes an annual look at Environmentally Responsible Packaging and Practices. Each year reveals subtle changes and ambitious goals as suppliers and brands advance towards a more ecologically balanced packaging future.
In researching this month’s feature on “Green” Packaging, we spoke to a number of suppliers, brands and market researchers who are seeing increasing interest and demand in this area, in large part driven by the Millennial population. This demographic holds strong principles and looks at consumables with a different point of view, ideals that are also spreading into corporate boardrooms as young achievers rise in the ranks or launch their own businesses.
As you’ll see in a number of other articles in this issue that focus on sustainable packaging—including European research from Euromonitor International; a packaging designer’s viewpoint; and a look at Weleda and Dr. Hauschka, two brands that originated the concept many years ago—consumer product companies are taking notice of purchasers’ awareness, and are becoming more transparent as they reveal environmental progress from manufacturing practices to recycled materials. See further examples in our features on new ideas in Metals and Metallics (page 44) and Hair Care (page 56): Eco-packaging is everywhere.
Beauty and Personal Care brands that have sustainability at their core continue to lead in this area, and in this issue you’ll read about their latest achievements. For example, Jonathan Maher, vice president CSR & Sustainability at L’Oréal USA, outlines how packaging comes into play in the global giant’s ambitious sustainability strategy. Rudi Becker, senior director of packaging and industrial design, at method, describes the rewards and challenges of the eco-brand’s commitment. Becker will also be a featured speaker on my panel on July 25th at Cosmoprof North America in Las Vegas. Hope to see you there!
Until then, please stop by our stand at Luxe Pack New York—or email me your thoughts and examples relating to environmentally responsible packaging. Also read an interview with eco-conscious beauty retailer Lush Cosmetics—and an article on engaging with Millennial and Gen-Z consumers.
We hope you enjoy this issue,
