Consumer goods giant Unilever has joined a growing number of large brand manufacturers in boosting their commitments to eco-responsible packaging. The company has announced that all of its plastic packaging will be fully reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.
In addition, Unilever said it would also help create a plastics protocol, to encourage similar moves across the industry.
According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF), an environmental group working with Unilever, only 14% of the world’s plastic packaging is recycled, while 40% ends up in landfill and a third in fragile ecosystems.
Unilever has already promised to light weight all of its packaging by one third in the current decade, and increase its use of recycled plastic content in its packaging to at least 25% by 2025.
Unilever holds a number of beauty brands in its portfolio, including its most recent acquisitions, Living Proof, Dollar Shave Club, Murad, Dermalogica, Ren and Kate Somerville.
