A recent report from Research and Markets values the cosmetic packaging market at more than $31 billion in 2021, and projects it to reach well over $43 billion by 2028; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.0% from 2021 to 2028.
Reasons given for the trajectory include the increasing demand for green packaging, especially in developed regions such as Europe, where flexible cosmetic packaging, in particular, is on the rise. The demand for flexible packaging has given new life to tubes, as you’ll read in our report in this issue. Once used primarily for pharma, paint and toothpaste, tubes in a wide range of sizes and colors, and with various dispensing tips now also serve as protection for products from skincare to color cosmetics. And so much for the simple look that once accompanied tubes of the past. Today, many go beyond protection, with shiny, ‘endlessly recyclable’ aluminum, enhanced with eye-catching caps and deco—or, left in a natural silvery metallic state to highlight aluminum’s sustainability features.
Airless packaging, which we also delve into in this issue has become a must-have for many skincare brands and consumers as a way to keep formulas safe. New technology and new materials for airless bottles and jars have also been making them easily refillable, boosting desirability even more.
In our story on paper-based packaging and cartons, you’ll see that these are more than ever the billboards that engage with consumers—telling sustainable stories about the brand and its eco-credentials front-and-center.
In our exclusive interview with Brice André, Global VP Sustainable Packaging and Development for L’Oréal Group, he shares some of the company’s sustainable innovations, including their launch of the first generation of tubes made from a combination of paper and plastic.
As cosmetic packaging continues to evolve, we’ll keep you in the know.
