Who's behind the latest creepy clown look brought to life this year by Joaquin Phoenix in Joker? Award-winning makeup artist Nicki Ledermann.
Ledermann had to use the same elements of the iconic look -- a white face, red grin, and green hair, in a new way, and explains the process in the story at Elle, The Makeup Artist Behind The Creepy ‘Joker’ Look That Will Own Halloween 2019.
What was unusual for Ledermann about this film was designing a makeup look that Phoenix could replicate himself, because there are scenes in the movie that required the actor to apply his own makeup. "I showed him the best way to do it, gave him the tools and makeup to use in the scene and he just perfected it," Ledermann tells Elle.
Ledermann says she used a lot of different products to exactly match all the textures and colors in each scene. The makeup had to be done quickly, perfectly matching the previous take when it "smeared" -- while sometimes appearing to smudge while it actually stayed put.
Lederman states in the story, "I used mainly MAC Cosmetics Chromacakes for my water-based makeup and Sian Richards 4k brio palette for smear and waterproof makeup."
