Recently, Kylie Cosmetics deleted all its Instagram photos except for one, and since then the website says "Something is Coming." (The photo on the right above is via @kyliejenner on Instagram.)
When we reached out for a comment, Coty explained that Kylie Cosmetics' line is being updated and a "refreshed cosmetics product assortment" is on track to launch this summer.
It seems that exciting new changes lie ahead, "built on a true collaboration between Kylie and Coty," Coty stated.
The Internet, however, is abuzz with other speculations.
The New Kylie Jenner Beauty
Coty's latest press release announces a new CEO for Kylie Cosmetics—and mentions the name "Kylie Jenner Beauty."We suspect that Kylie Jenner Beauty is Coty's new name for the beauty empire it's building with Jenner, and perhaps it will combine Kylie Cosmetics and Kylie Skin. (Shown above are several products from Kylie Skin, and take a look at Jenner promoting the brand's Makeup Melting Cleanser in the video below.)
Upcoming package design changes may be one reason why Kylie Cosmetics' products are temporarily unavailable. (And this may have something to do with the fact that makeup artist Vlada Haggerty filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the brand back in 2016.)
But wait, there's more...
The Internet is now buzzing about another possible reason for why Kylie Cosmetics was recently marked down in stores, disappeared from Instagram, and isn't available right now on the brand's website. Our story last year, Seed Beauty Sues Coty, Wins Injunction was posted in the subreddit BeautyGuruChatter, and keeps getting reposted on Reddit.
The Reddit post says:
"If any of you were still wondering why Kylie Cosmetics suddenly closed shop & discounted everything, it’s because their former manufacturer Seed Beauty was able to get a temporary injunction while the pursue a lawsuit against Kim, Kylie, & Coty (not b/c they actually wanted a fresh “rebrand”)"
To simplify, Kylie Cosmetic's former manufacturer, Seed Beauty, filed a lawsuit after Coty acquired a majority stake in the brand. Kylie and Coty may own the brand name, but Seed Beauty claims to own Kylie Cosmetics' formulas—and other trade secrets regarding manufacturing and marketing that were crucial to catapulting the brand to success.
Forbes explained that Seed Beauty handled everything, from packaging to fulfillment, and the manufacturer employed 500 people just to work on Kylie Cosmetics.
Kylie and Coty have said they want to settle the disagreement out of court, filing for arbitration.
Is it the End—Or A New Era for Kylie's Beauty Empire?
Coty is hard at work on the relaunch—and we are excited to see the changes that are in store for Kylie Cosmetics, and Kylie Jenner Beauty. We have no doubt that Coty's experts are up to the task of launching new products that will be just as great as the originals, if not better—but we also know that beauty consumers are super critical. Whenever a brand changes anything about a product or its formula, it doesn't go unnoticed—and is endlessly critiqued by beauty fans online.
Even if everything changes, from the product formulations to the packaging—Coty's still got Kylie Jenner.
And—like Coty—we're betting that Jenner will continue to successfully sell her beauty line to her hundreds of millions of loyal followers on social media.
