Sephora has announced the expansion of Beauty (Re)Purposed—Sephora’s empties collection program in partnership with Pact Collective—across North America.
Sephora first partnered with Pact Collective last year and launched the Beauty (Re)Purposed pilot program to “give your finished beauty products a second life.”
This program places Pact Collective bins in select Sephora stores where customers can add their empty beauty and wellness products to a bin, diverting these containers from landfills.
“The launch of the Beauty (Re)Purposed program is an exciting step forward in Sephora’s commitment to leading the industry and offering more sustainable solutions for the communities we serve. And the reality is that discarding beauty packaging can be complex for many consumers,” explains Desta Raines, director of sustainability at Sephora.
She adds, “It was important for Sephora to find a partner like Pact who shares our values and, in collaboration, can help to educate our clients and the broader industry in making the process more accessible for all.”

Expanding Across North America
As of January 2023, there were over 70 Sephora locations in the U.S. and several more in Canada with collection bins. Starting in May, the program will expand to all U.S. and Canada stores. More than 600 Sephora stores across North America will now have a home for empties.“The launch of the Beauty (Re)Purposed program is an exciting step forward in Sephora’s commitment to leading the industry and offering more sustainable solutions for the communities we serve. How It Works
Guidelines for understanding what materials can and cannot be recycled can be confusing. Beauty (Re)Purposed aims to simplify the process and provide all beauty shoppers with clear directions on how they can help divert beauty packaging landfill waste. No matter the brand of product, shoppers can drop-off their beauty packaging in three easy steps:- Clean it out: At home, make sure packaging is clean, unbagged, and free of liquid or product.
- Drop it off: Visit any U.S. or Canadian Sephora store and drop the empties that meet Pact’s collection guidelines in the dedicated collection bin.
- Close the loop: All done! Instead of being thrown away, the beauty empties could become something else – like carpet, pallets, asphalt, new packaging, or energy.
