Beauty Packaging asked Yoshie Obara, environmental officer for Jurlique, who is based in South Australia, about the brand’s commitment to the environment.
In 2016, Jurlique transitioned its whole product range from aluminum tube packaging to plastic tubes. While aluminum had been one of the brand’s most common packaging types, it produced the highest supply chain and on-line production wastage, according to Obara. She says while investigating more sustainable packaging options, their assessment showed that plastic tubes are lighter in weight than the aluminum equivalent and lower in overall environmental impact.
Obara says, “This transition has significantly reduced environmental impact as well as supply chain and on-line production waste of packaging materials. The PIQET assessment has indicated that the plastic tubes have approximately 28% less environmental impact than aluminum tubes.”
BP: What is Jurlique’s brand commitment to environmentally responsible packaging? Is it an influencer toward purchasing?
Obara: Jurlique’s commitment to the environment is all-encompassing; we place a high level of importance on all areas of our packaging supply chain. Sustainable packaging is an important element in the design of all of our products. We carefully consider where all of our packaging materials come from and what impacts and stresses they place on the planet’s resources. Procurement/purchasing is a critical part of the Jurlique Packaging Development Process.
BP: Are your customers aware of this effort regarding packaging?
Obara: We strive to communicate recycling information/environmental concerns through environmental events such as Earth Day and Tree Day, and on our packaging.
BP: What are the challenges faced in eco packaging?
Obara: Meeting both aesthetic and sustainability criteria can be challenging.
