The 2018 Cosmoprof and Cosmopack shows in Bologna, Italy, celebrated several award winners — including a few stand-out products and packaging innovations.
Cosmopack’s ‘Best of the Best’
Cosmopack’s top winner — in the ‘Best of the Best’ and Makeup categories, is Gotha Cosmetics’ Second Chance Makeup Drops.
The product helps to “revive” any mascara by extending its life, giving it a “second chance.” Add three to five drops to any mascara that is showing signs of dryness. It will intensify the shine and color while moisturizing, nourishing and replenishing the lashes.
The package’s manufacturing process has a low environmental impact, and the product’s formula has a simplified ingredient list, with 98% natural ingredients.
The water-based, biodegradable formula contains Hydrosoluble Argan Oil, for “emollience, nourishment and softness to the texture and to the lashes, “the supplier states. It also contains sea water and seaweed extract, which have moisturizing benefits for lashes.
The product is jellified to ensure a “perfect drop release” while applying it, without waste. The color is a “darker than black” pigment made using a micronized powder for an intensified color.
More Stand-Out Winners — Skincare Dispensing
Two innovative winners, one from Cosmopack, and the other from Cosmoprof, both may be game-changing in skincare.
Yonwoo took home the trophy in the Best Skincare Technology category for its auto-loading Ampoule Dropper. (See it here in the slideshow, 2018 Cosmopack Winners).
The innovative dropper’s design allows for the use of a low-viscosity product immediately after opening the cap. There is no need to load the product into the dropper, since the bulk is not contained in the bottle (which is made from soft rubber), but instead, placed in the pipette. (For more about Yonwoo/PKG and innovative dispensing technologies, see Beauty Packaging’s recent feature, Precision Dispensing.)
The ‘Best of the Best’ winner in the Cosmoprof Awards is Lesielle Cosmetics’ Adaptive Skin Care. It is a “new generation of personalized skin care that continuously evolves with the user’s needs and personal preferences,” the company states. Developed for the mass market, it allows the user to personalize hydration level, texture, and type of treatment — and these factors can all be changed before each use.
The concept works using Lesielle Cosmetics’ patent-pending personal device. The user chooses a base, plus up to four actives — and pushes a button to dispense a single, custom dose.
The concept was fully funded on Kickstarter and expects to ship its first devices to consumers in October 2018.
The Trophy
A new Cosmoprof trophy shown above, made its debut this year. It is shaped like a glass bubble, to represent “the delicacy, elegance, design, and craftsmanship in the beauty packaging industry,” the show’s organizers say. Centdegrés and MMB collaborated to manufacture the trophy.
The bubble is made of hand-blown glass, which makes each trophy unique, and it stands on a metal base. The base raises and highlights the glass part — displaying it as a luxurious object in the same way a beautiful package displays a luxurious beauty product.
The Lifetime Achievement Award
The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, who created numerous successful fragrances before retiring this year. He was responsible for First for Van Cleef & Arpels in 1976; l’Eau parfumée for Bulgari in 1992; and In Love Again for Yves Saint Laurent and Déclaration for Cartier, both in 1998. In 2004, he was appointed exclusive in-house perfumer at Hermès.
The Juries
Cosmoprof and Cosmopack assembled separate juries to vote on the winners. Judges included brand executives, package designers, R&D experts, and more.
Cosmopack’s jury included Jessica Blanco, director of product development, MILK Makeup; Sam Cheow, chief product accelerator, L'Oréal USA; Olivier Guillemin, creative consultant, Shiseido; and Marc Rosen, president/CEO, Marc Rosen Associates (and a member of Beauty Packaging’s Board of Advisors).
