What is there to say about 2020 that hasn’t already been said? Forest fires, the Covid-19 pandemic, social upheaval and an election; to many of us watching it all unfold from quarantine, it seemed like the end of the world.
Well, despite everything, the world continued to spin. As 2020 ends and we usher in 2021, this is a great moment to look back at the past year and reflect on both the good and the bad.
Beauty Industry Recap
2020 was a tumultuous and eventful year for the beauty industry.
In January, The Beautiful Group (TBG) transferred back to Regis approximately 200 mall-based salons operating primarily under the Regis and Mastercuts brands. TBG previously acquired these from Regis.
In February, Hermès Beauty announced its first makeup products -- Rouge Hermès, a lipstick collection. The fashion brand has a 180-year-history, and this launch marked its debut in the cosmetics world.
Also in February, BolognaFiere Cosmoprof SpA, organizer of Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna, postponed the 2020 edition. It was supposed to be held March 12-16. This was one of the first major beauty events to be canceled or postponed.
In March, Mynd Spa & Salon filed for bankruptcy and closed its doors, permanently -- after posting a few days earlier that it was closing temporarily due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In May, Ulta Beauty reopened 180 stores across seven states. It was one of the first retailers in the United States to reopen after the shutdown.
In June, Kylie Cosmetics (51% of which was recently purchased by Coty) launched the Kendall Collection, created in collaboration with Kendall Jenner. Also, The Estée Lauder Companies formed a third brand cluster—and Jane Hertzmark Hudis, John Demsey, and Stéphane de La Faverie, received new roles.
