Cosmetic Packaging with a Sense of Humor

Product names and graphics make beauty playful and fun.

Nail polish brands may have been first to start the trend, with their catchy, tongue-in-cheek descriptive names. Beauty brands such as Benefit, Too Faced, Glossier, Nars and Urban Decay have won over tons of consumers with clever names and humorous approaches to packaging that makes products irresistible—and very social media friendly. See the slideshow above for a look at some recent favorites. (For more examples, please check out Nick Dormon’s article here.)

Flirt Cosmetics

Flirt Cosmetics displays a touch of feminine whimsy on its packaging—much of it adorned with free-hand drawings by artist, Donald Robertson, who is also the new brand’s Creative Director.

Too Faced Cosmetics

Too-Faced Cosmetics is known for their covetable and “shareable” packaging, including their breakthrough palettes that look and smell like chocolate bars. Now the brand has released Too Faced: Totally Cute Sticker Eye Shadow Collection—a combo of stickers and makeup. Use the Totally Cute sticker collection to customize your palette of nine brand new shades in matte to shimmer finishes. And let’s not forget the brand’s “Better Than Sex Mascara” which sold millions of packs in record time. Too Faced’s Peach Collection, with happy looking “anthropomorphic” peaches on the packaging and stamped on the powders is another sweet spot for sales. No wonder The Estee Lauder Companies couldn’t resist purchasing the brand for a cool $1.5 billion.

Glossier

Apply stickers to the packaging for Glossier and make them your own with a unique, personal touch.

ColourPop - Hello Kitty

The pop icon Hello Kitty teamed with the Southern California-based global cosmetics company, ColourPop, to release a Color Cosmetics line on the famous feline’s 40th birthday.

Inspired by Hello Kitty’s super-cute world, ColourPop x Hello Kitty is a full cosmetics collection for the eyes, lips and face ranging from $5-$42. The collection consists of singles, sets of four eye shadow shades, and a face kit that pairs three eye shadows, blush, highlighter and signature ColourPop ultra matte and ultra-gloss “lippies.” Color names like “School Bus” take consumers along for a joyous ride. (MAC partnered with the iconic Sanrio character several years ago.)

Benefit’s ‘Cheeky’ Packages

As merry shoppers head to the beauty aisles for the holidays, Benefit has released cosmetics packaged in adorable doll-like heads, which hold coordinated makeup kits for lips & cheeks, as well as full face. These “head-turning” beauties contain some of the brand’s bestsellers. Kits named Girls Gone Wow and Dolly Darling are sure to hang around on the vanity table for years to come.

Urban Decay

Not only do Urban Decay’s nail colors bring new relevance to matching—as the nude shades match the brand’s iconic Naked palettes”—but they provide a sense of daring and dry humor with skulls attached to the caps of the standout bottles.
