Earlier this month, the Javits Center in Manhattan—site of many industry trade shows, past present and future—reported it would not be hosting any events until Thursday, April 30, 2020.
The plan has since changed. On Saturday, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that the Javits Center tops his list of locations to be turned into field hospitals to test and possibly treat cases of COVID-19.
Cuomo shared his plan on March 21 as New York state broke the 10,000 mark on coronavirus cases, identifying 3,254 new cases in one day of testing. In New York City alone, confirmed cases jumped 1,800 individuals – a 30% increase.
"We're requesting 4 field hospitals at 250 capacity each. That would give us 1,000 field hospital beds,” remarked Cuomo. “We're going to be looking at Javits as a location for those field hospitals.”
The other sites for field hospitals include SUNY Stonybrook, Westbury and Westchester Convention Center.
“Javits is so big that it can take the four field hospitals and an Army Corps of Engineers temporary hospital. We're also requesting assistance with medical supplies which has been a very big topic of conversation all across the country,” added Cuomo.
